Marc-Antoine Charpentier was the French composer of the Grand Siècle who left the largest number of works specifically related to Christmas. Here, going beyond the famous Messe de Minuit, listeners will be all the more enchanted by his histoires sacrées (brief oratorios) and Noëls pour les instruments when they are presented by the composer’s most fervent advocates.

“…The popular Midnight Mass setting is paired with a Te Deum, two motets (one big and dramatic) and a sprinkling of charming Nöels. The singing is bright, rhythms are bouncy and ornamentations never get out of hand. Every sound, too, is perfectly balanced and blended, the wonderful music’s intricate textures given their full due.” ****
Geoff Brown – The Times – 13 December 2023
