About
In the course of her long life, Johanna Senfter enriched almost all genres of classical music, from chamber music to large-scale symphonic works. Her creations are all characterized by one unique feature – a harsh, almost austere beauty that spans from deep intimacy to whimsical humor, which even repeatedly surprised the composer's teacher, Max Reger. Reger, the heavyweight workhorse from Upper Palatinate, was extremely impressed by the creative abilities of his pupil, whose career he was unfortunately unable to follow for too long. No doubt one or two turns of phrase would have sounded familiar to him had he experienced them; but he certainly would not have denied that this woman from a well-to-do family had asserted her own vision.

Interpretation **** Sound Quality **** Repertoire Value **** Booklet ****
“… The musicians interpret their works with great commitment and power, but by no means in a reckless manner. On the contrary, the interpretations seem controlled and very carefully worked out, sometimes even a little sober. In most cases, the scores or at least other interpretations are not yet readily available, which makes the Else Ensemble's efforts all the more commendable.”
“… The excellent musicians of the Else Ensemble do these works proud and CPO’s sound is superb.”

“…There is a lot of interesting stuff to discover here … a nice, welcome new release.”
“…The Else Ensemble approaches these compositions with impressive musicianship. Their instruments blend with a very high degree of balance and homogeneity. The great breath of the Senfter works is expressed very well, with charisma and tension maintained from the first to the last note. The accents are carefully placed and graduated, the tempi are controlled and the tonal weights are carefully balanced. And the unity of interpretation, which is the be-all and end-all of these recordings, is always surprising.” *****
