Review for SIGCD833 & 834
“The third and fourth volumes of Llyr Williams’ Schubert cycle for Signum are issued as separate discs. The piano sound on both is warm yet detailed, qualities that could equally apply to Williams’ playing. His strength is finding tempos that feel right, something immediately noticeable in the first Impromptu of the D899 set. Assertion without over-emphasis is another of Williams’ strengths, as is a sure and firm sense of rhythm … There is no doubt that Williams’ Schubert is compelling, even considering the wealth of fine alternatives available … Temptingly, disc seven of this series will comprise transcriptions of Schubert Lieder, offering yet another slant on Williams’ Schubert.”
