“… The recorded sound is quite fine; beautiful in tone, detailed, and packing the requisite punch in the grand moments … There is much to commend in this Naxos recording …”
Ken Meltzer – Fanfare – May/June 2021
“The Bachchor Mainz and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie present an extremely well-shaped and moving recording of the German Requiem by Johannes Brahms. Ralf Otto conducts the work with deep breath and with moderate, but ultimately very appropriate tempos. Well-proportioned, the music’s flow and pulsation are meaningful, if necessary also dramatic, but it is the meditative and interiorized character that overwhelms and fully expresses the spiritual dimension of the composition. With perfect intonation and homogeneity the Bach Choir follows the conductor devotedly in this highly intense performance, in which the text of the Requiem is fully fathomed. The two soloists, Matthias Winckler, with his beautiful and sensitive bright baritone voice, as well as Christina Gansch with her clear, angelic soprano, also fit seamlessly into the interpretation. The Deutsche Radio Philharmonie is another important partner in this auratic performance. With beautiful colours, light and dark, the very committed orchestra plays, alongside the Bach Choir, at a high level.” *****
