About
César Franck is perhaps best known for his organ works and late masterpieces such as the Violin Sonata. His Symphony in D minor has also been widely recorded and is often coupled with LeChasseur maudit, a work that ranks among his most popular and frequently performed orchestral works. Les Éolides and Psychéare more impressionistic in atmosphere, and much appreciated for their subtle orchestration and lyrical inventiveness. Jean-Luc Tingaud’s recordings for Naxos have always done very well, with Poulenc’s Les Biches (8.573739) given a 10/10 score by ClassicsToday.com, along with comments such as ‘Tingaud’s precise, clear-eyed direction is just what this music needs’. Vincent d’Indy’s Second Symphony (8.573522), also with the RSNO, was given a rave review by Fanfare: ‘This recording [by] Tingaud and his Scottish orchestra should absolutely fire up new interest in a composer who has been unjustly neglected. Very strongly, if not urgently, recommended.’ The Royal Scottish National Orchestra has a worldwide reputation for the quality of its recordings, receiving two Diapason d’or de l’année awards for Symphonic Music and eight GRAMMY Award nominations over the last decade. The RSNO’s numerous Naxos recordings include Roussel’s Symphony No. 2(8.570529) conducted by Stéphane Denève which gained the Gramophone ‘Editor’s Choice’.

“… Excellent readings by Tingaud, superb playing and singing by the Scottish National Orchestra and RCS Voices, and a fine recording by Naxos add up to a strong recommendation.”
Jerry Dubins – Fanfare – September/October 2020
**** Excellent Album
Jacques Bonnaure – Classica magazine (France) – October 2020
"... Tingaud's performance is highly successful at communicating the poetry and rapture inherent in the music. He also gives us a very good account of the literary-inspired tone poem Le chasseur maudit ('The Accursed Huntsman') of 1882, whose darkness and energy provide a strong contrast with the later work..."

“… So we are dealing with top-class performances here … Repertoire value and interpretation justify our top rating.”

"…quite frankly after today, this is the recording to own. […] If you love César Franck…you probably want to hear this as soon as possible. Jean-Luc Tingaud with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra on Naxos doing the Le Chasseur maudit, Psyché and Les Éolides. It’s a Franck festival."
David Hurwitz - ClassicsToday.com - June 2020
"... Jean-Luc Tingaud is leading a valuable series of recordings of French music for Naxos. With the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, superbly captured, he benefits from an orchestra of very high calibre. We ask for more!"
Pierre Jean Tribot - Crescendo (France) - June 2020
"... Franck has a decent claim to being the most influential French composer of the 19th century—this is a reminder of the clarity of his orchestral vision.
…Franck’s last symphonic poem, Psyché, a retelling of the story of Psyche and Eros that was completed in 1887, just before the D minor Symphony. It’s easily the most substantial of the three here, cast in eight scenes lasting almost 50 minutes and requiring a chorus as well as a large orchestra. If the music doesn’t always justify the scale and the forces involved, the best of it, as so often in Franck, is very fine indeed. " ****

“… Tingaud has the music in his blood and draws playing of ravishing beauty from the RSNO, whose priapic horns in Le Chasseur maudit (Accursed Huntsman) make a splendid sound.”
High Canning – The Sunday Times (Culture magazine) – 31 May 2020
