“… Offenbach was a gifted operetta composer, one with a talent for fetching, unforgettable melodies, captivating energy, and colourful, transparent orchestration. And so, all of the music on this disc is very much worth hearing. The performances are quite fine, too. Conductor Howard Griffiths elicits lovely, rich-toned, and incisive playing from the Brandenburg State Orchestra of Frankfurt. The recording is admirable too, with ample richness and detail, and a lack of sense of artificial enhancement. This listener’s perspective is cone a center orchestra seat in a fine hall… If you are interested in exploring lesser-known but still worthy Offenbach fare, this CPO disc serves quite nicely.”
