“… Davis gives a carefully thought out reading [Polonia] which at the same time revels in the sheer enjoyment of the themes and their orchestration. The recording, too, is superb…The Interlude from The Crown of India is a minor masterpiece, and is marvelously played by Tasmin Little… And so to the concerto itself. In a word stunning… Tasmin Little brings a classical feel to it- its distant roots in Beethovens concerto are ever present and she always has her emotions under control. That is far from saying that her playing of the music is not emotional, rather that head and heart are in immaculate balance in this interpretation. Andrew Davis and the orchestra match her in thought, word and deed every step of the way. Whatever favourites you may have in your collection, this will without question enhance it. Don’t hold back!”
Martin Bird - Elgar Society Journal - April 2011
“…this new recording fully bears out her [Little’s] love and total empathy with the music. It is a magnificent performance, of the very highest quality, and the recorded sound is, I am certain, the finest this Concerto has ever had on disc. In penetrating and deeply moving playing, she is wonderfully accompanied by this great orchestra and conductor, making this issue – so far as I am concerned – the first choice today … a disc that has clearly been planned with considerable care: it is a magnificent achievement all round.”

“…Little brings a profoundly idiomatic nostalgia to this secretive, yearning, wistful yet passionate music. The extras make it an Elgarian must-have …”
Hugh Canning - Sunday Times - 28 November 2010
“…She [Tasmin Little] has waited 20 years before making this recording, and she has a triumph. Playing with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under Elgarian Andrew Davis, she gives a dynamic performance, wistful in the second, and again achieving sad nostalgia for lost love which Elgar brngs to the final cadenza of the latest movement …Producer Brian Pidgeon and Engineer Ralph Couzens have achieved a fine sound in the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, for this Chandos release."
Peter Spaull - Liverpool Daily Post - 19 November 2010

“…Andrew Davis brings out all the natural swagger in these patriotic themes and is helped not just by virtuoso playing by the RSNO but by recording that is outstandingly vivid even by Chandos’s high standards.”
Edward Greenfield - Gramophone magazine - December 2010
“…For sheer beauty of tone and expressive nostalgia, Tasmin Little and Sir Andrew Davis out-Elgar their rivals…” *****

“… a superb new recording from Tasmin Little that goes right to the top of the class.” *****
David Mellor - The Mail on Sunday - 14 November 2010
“…This release celebrates 100 years since the first performance, and includes, on a separate track, the special cadenza – with heavenly harp flourishes – used in the first recording in 1916. This is a fascinating document for Elgar-lovers, but Little’s performance, wistful, poetic and powerful, with sympathetic accompaniment from Davis and the RSNO, demands attention in its own right.”

I just wanted to convey my thanks and appreciation for the recent Tamasin Little version of the Elgar Violin Concerto.
Everything about this disc is admirable: wonderful solo work from Ms.Little, wonderful conducting and orchestral playing and all captured in a wonderfully engineered recording.
The Elgar is my favourite violin concerto; I have at least ten other recordings.
This release by Tasmin Little and Andrew Davis has gone straight to the top of my list.
Many, many thanks to everyone involved.

I downloaded 'Polonia' to replace, in my collection, the EMI Boult recording that I possess on LP.A rarity in the catalogues. Excellent Chandos sound.
