Jarvi's panache can work miracles in the right kind of music - e.g. his Don Juan (on another album) is a top notch performance full of glorious, impassioned orchestral playing. Don Quixote finds him somewhat out of sorts with the wit and sardonic fun in which the composer indulged. It is all a little too straightforward. Right at the beginning when the violins come in, the Johann-Straussian lilt you find in Kempe or Karajan just isn't there; the long schoolmastery oration of the solo viola sounds much to elegant here, whereas the player should be given licence to poke fun as well as admonish. Obviously these are small criticism, but they do add up and distract somewhat from the charm of the work, that one expects. Wallfisch is also a bit on the too serious side in his characterisation, though his tone and execution leave nothing to be desired. He is supremely eloquent in the final pages. In short, as a whole this performance misses top billing when judged against authentic Straussians like Reiner, Szell, Karajan and Kempe. But in part this is compensated by the glorious recording. Certainly I would not suggest that I made a mistake buying this, or that you should look elsewhere. Many points of view enhance one's view of the work, and this recording belong among the best, just beneath the great master performances I have mentioned. The trifles at the end fill up the disc adequately, but I have to say that if they weren't included, you would miss nothing worthwhile.
