About
Miklós Rózsa feared that success as a film composer might overshadow his reputation as a composer of classical concert fare. He was right: Three Oscars and 17 Academy Award nominations will do that to you. The two worlds were strangely incompatible and forced Rózsa into what he called his “Double Life” – both the name of one of the films for which he won an Oscar and the title of his autobiography. “… Performances, sound, and conducting all support the many virtues of these works… The works on this disc would grace any program.”
Editor’s Choice – May 2024
“… Appropriately, Bühl and his Rhineland orchestra attack the rhythms energetically – not only here, but throughout – and while the orchestral ensemble is tight, there is also a slightly rough edge to their sound that emphasises the Hungarian folk influence whenever it appears…” ****
“This is an immensely enjoyable disc … splendid though some of the past performances of these pieces were, the sheer exuberance and command of orchestral colour channelled into these readings is non-pareil.”

“…Gregor Bühl and the German State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate clearly had fun with this technically challenging, colorful music and stayed focused throughout, but also with the nonchalance required here. The recording technology places the orchestra clearly in the room with lush dynamics… Spirited, colorful and virtuoso music close to Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra and Hindemith's Symphony Mathis the Painter …”
“This is an immensely enjoyable disc and a reminder – if that were needed – of the composer Miklós Rósza’s skills in the classical field as opposed his matchless film scores… the sheer exuberance and command of orchestral colour channelled into these readings is non-pareil.”
“… The Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz impresses as a whole and at the same time through the quality of its soloists. The recording technique is very good, so that this recording can only be recommended.” *****
