“…Stellar trio illuminate Tchaikovsky and more.” ****½
The Strad Recommends
“Since 1926, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio has been garnering fine recordings, with a benchmark account by Gilel, Kogan and Rostropovich … This new performance is among the best. The ‘Great Artist’ being commemorated, Nikolai Rubinstein, was a fine pianist and the piano anchors the work: Yevgeny Sudbin is a terrific player and his colleagues are well matched… Well balanced recordings, with virtuosity placed at the service of the music.”
“Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio is an instrumental Requiem which inspired several other Russian composers. In the slow movement the Babajanian Trio has also a mourning character. Schnittke’s short waltz is surrealistically charming. With their exquisite and refined playing Gluzman, Moser und Sudbin identify the characteristics of each work. If all three are outstanding artists in their own right, we don’t see any competition for supremacy. They don’t fail to share a common musical sense and above all to listen to each other. Their account of the three works conveys the deep emotions of the expansive music with great sympathy, intensity and warmth.” *****
“… A disc of the highest standards of recording and performance; a less known but interesting work is a bonus.”
