About
Behzod Abduraimov joins Alpha for several recordings, starting with this ‘kaleidoscope of miniatures’ – miniatures that are in fact fairly gigantic, and showcase the Uzbek pianist’s extreme virtuosity and sensitivity. ‘Each movement is in itself a miniature, and taken together they form a kaleidoscope of human emotions and images of all kinds’, says Behzod Abduraimov. In his view, the pieces in Debussy’s Children’s Corner are not intended for young piano students, but ‘for adults, so that they can immerse themselves in the world of children with a little nostalgia and a lot of humour’. When it comes to Chopin, ‘each prelude has a different musical essence, creates its own atmosphere. Together they form an arc spanning the distance from the first prelude to the last. So I tried to consider them as a whole’. Finally, Mussorgsky evokes in ten highly expressive movements the paintings at an exhibition held in posthumous tribute to his friend Viktor Hartmann. A ‘Promenade’ heard several times suggests Mussorgsky himself strolling through the exhibition. For Behzod Abduraimov, ‘the “Promenades” play a key role in this cycle: they create the atmosphere before each painting’. Under Valery Gergiev's direction, Behzod has already recorded with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra and (during the 2016 BBC Proms) the Munich Philharmonic. Born in 1990, Behzod Abduraimov is one of the most promising pianists of his generation.

“… there is little wrong with the performances of this canonical repertoire, as Abduraimov is convincing due to his great musical qualities and brilliant technique…Abduraimov is an interesting and promising pianist who will certainly be heard from more in the future.”

“You think there are already enough barnstorming pianists in the world? Maybe. But maybe it would be better to rest a few and make room for the Tashkent-born, US-trained Behzod Abduraimov. His latest recital makes the case, with Mussorgsky to rival the finest ever, supremely subtle Debussy, and Chopin as masterful in overall architecture as it is in detail.”

“…I've not heard a more consistently interesting Pictures: you can almost hear the words with the 'two Jews', and the finale is marvellously built with an extremely wide dynamic range. 'Tuileries', 'Limoges; and 'Unhatched chicks' are dazzling. The Chopin Preludes show so many touches of individuality (as they should) with beautifully soft playing in the tranquil numbers. And Debussy's 'Snowflakes' really dance!”
Christopher Breunig – HiFi News.com – 29 July 2021
"...This is more than a flawless recital played with technical bravura and a born soloist's confidence. Abduraimov is a major pianist, worth talking about in the same breath as the international stars whose names as fare more widely known. Like all of his previous releases, the present one affords the most enjoyable listen to any lover of great piano playing."
Huntley Dent - Fanfare - May/June 2021
“…With a top-notch recording and generous playing times, this is a must have.”

“… A very generous album in excess of 83 minutes, recorded in Berlin’s Teldex Studio with excellent engineering and instrument, though occasional intrusions from Abduraimov in the Mussorgsky and Chopin are especially noticeable through headphones. The Debussy has the strongest overarching unity, and despite some momentary weaknesses in the Mussorgsky and Chopin, all things considered, a worthy listen and an enjoyable recital.”

“…All in all, a serious candidate for a benchmark recording, capping a most distinguished recital.”
Michelle Assay – Gramophone magazine – January 2021
"Abduraimov’s programme seems designed to display the Tashkent-born pianist’s versatility. Ringing, generously pedalled sounds, rich in harmonics, and a fleetness and precision of execution characterise his account of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. In the Chopin Preludes his warm singing tone summons soulful depths ..."
