Ferio Saxophone Quartet

As one of the leading ensembles of its kind among the new generation of British artists, the Ferio Saxophone Quartet consistently meets with a highly enthusiastic reception from audiences and critics alike. The founder members met at the Royal College of Music in 2014, and in 2015 the Quartet won the Royal Over-Seas League’s Ensemble Competition. Appointed The Philharmonia / Martin Musical Ensemble, it made its début at the Purcell Room the same year. Among other early accolades, the Quartet was a Tunnell Trust Awardee for 2015 – 16, and named Park Lane Group Artist for 2015 – 16 and St John’s Smith Square Young Artist for 2016 – 17. It made its Wigmore Hall début in 2016. A tour to New Zealand and Australia soon followed, and the Quartet is now regularly invited to major festivals such as Church Stretton, Bermuda, Absolute Classics, Edinburgh Fringe, Brighton, Beaminster, Newbury, Machynlleth, North Norfolk, Petworth, Ryedale, and Septembre musical de l’Orne, in Normandy.

Commissioning new music is an important strand of the Ferio Saxophone Quartet’s work. Laura Bowler, Simon Rowland-Jones, and Guillermo Lago have written pieces for the Quartet, which also works closely with the composer and arranger Iain Farrington. This collaboration has enabled the development of new projects and partnerships, such as the present disc with the pianist Timothy End. The Quartet has already released two albums on Chandos: Flux, in 2017, and Revive, in 2018, a disc of baroque transcriptions by Iain Farrington, which was launched at Rhinegold Live, hosted by the magazine Classical Music. Another exciting new collaboration is developing with the vocal ensemble Corvus Consort. Their first project together was a video, recorded in isolation and produced during the first coronavirus lockdown, which was premièred by The Sixteen as part of that ensemble’s Sublime Online Festival, in July 2020; they gave their first concert together at the Winchfield Festival, in August 2021.
