Britten Sinfonia
Britten Sinfonia emerged in 1992 as a bold reimagining of the conventional chamber orchestra. A flexible ensemble comprising the UK’s leading soloists came together with a vision: to collapse the boundaries between old and new music; to collaborate with composers, conductors, and guest artists across the arts, focussing on the musicians rather than following the vision of a principal conductor; and to create involving, intelligent musical events that audiences and performers experience with an unusual intensity. Named after Benjamin Britten, the orchestra is based in the East of England, where Britten’s roots were strong. Today it is heralded as one of the world’s leading ensembles and its philosophy of adventure and reinvention has inspired a new movement of chamber groups. Resident at Saffron Hall, in Essex, at the Barbican, London, and in Norwich, Norfolk, it also appears at UK festivals such as the BBC Proms, Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts, and Norfolk & Norwich Festival. The ensemble regularly tours to communities in the East of England, appearing at venues ranging from village halls to schools halls, hospital wards, and prisons, bringing musical experiences to people of all ages. Britten Sinfonia also tours the US, Asia, and all over Europe, having performed via livestream to a million people worldwide from the Sistine Chapel.
