BBC Concert Orchestra

The flexibility and versatility of the BBC Concert Orchestra allow it to tackle a wide range of repertoire and enter into innovative collaborations. The house orchestra for BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night Is Music Night for fifty-five years, the ensemble also broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and has provided the soundtrack to many BBC TV programmes, including The Blue Planet, Walking with Dinosaurs, and ZingZillas. The Orchestra recently appointed Keith Lockhart as Principal Conductor and Johannes Wildner as Principal Guest Conductor, complementing its Conductor Laureate, Barry Wordsworth. The conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra for the past fifteen years, whose passion for Broadway is manifest, Keith Lockhart masters an eclectic repertoire, while Johannes Wildner is an expert on the music of the Strauss family, specialising in opera throughout Europe. New composers from all musical genres have been lining up to write for the Orchestra, which in recent years has premiered Popcorn Superhet Receiver and Doghouse by its most recent Composer-in-Residence, Jonny Greenwood, from the band Radiohead. In 2007 the Orchestra teamed up with Will Gregory, one half of the electronica duo Goldfrapp, for a performance of his score to Victor Sjöström’s 1924 classic silent film He Who Gets Slapped, and in 2011 will perform a new opera by Gregory at the Southbank Centre. Working with schools, colleges, and a wide range of community groups around the country remains high on the BBC Concert Orchestra’s learning agenda.
