Philip Dukes
Described by The Times as ‘Great Britain’s most outstanding solo viola player’, Philip Dukes has appeared as a concerto soloist with the BBC Philharmonic, London Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Northern Sinfonia, Orchestra of St John’s Smith Square, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He made his debut as a concerto soloist at the BBC Proms in 1995, returning in 1999, 2005 and 2007. Professor of Viola at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he is also Visiting Professor of Viola at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, Artistic Director of Marlborough College in Wiltshire, and Artistic Director of the Festival international de musique de la Hague in France. Philip Dukes was unanimously elected a Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2006 in recognition of his success as an international viola soloist, and in 2007 was made an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. His discography includes the complete works for viola by Rebecca Clarke, the Triple Concerto by Sir Michael Tippett, and, for Chandos, works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Frank Martin, and Richard Rodney Bennett.
