Paul Daniel
Having appeared as a guest conductor with major orchestras throughout the world, Paul Daniel CBE will take up the position of Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in Perth in 2009. He was Music Director of Opera Factory from 1987 to 1990, of Opera North from 1990 to 1997, and of English National Opera from 1997 to 2005. During these years he attracted critical acclaim for his performances of a vast repertoire, including the world premiere of Baa Baa Black Sheep by Michael Berkeley, Playing Away by Benedict Mason, The Mask of Orpheus by Sir Harrison Birtwistle and The Silver Tassie by Mark Anthony Turnage. He has also appeared at The Metropolitan Opera in New York, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, Grand théâtre de Genève, Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro Real in Madrid and Frankfurt Opera, as well as the Aix-en-Provence, Aldeburgh and Bregenz festivals. As Principal Conductor of the English Northern Philharmonia, the orchestra of Opera North, he conducted numerous concerts throughout the UK and at festivals abroad. Paul Daniel received an Olivier Award in February 1998 for outstanding achievement in opera, and was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2000 New Year’s Honours list. He has made a number of recordings for Chandos on the Opera in English label.
