Nigel Robson began his singing career in Monteverdi’s Orfeo at English National Opera in the production with David Freeman and John-Eliot Gardiner after some notable roles at Gyndebourne.  As a child Nigel had discovered a passion for Bach that moved him beyond the brass which had been part of his childhood upbringing. Later at York University he was a co-founder of the Landini Consort early music group.

Following his ENO debut, he went on to make a significant contribution to David Freeman’s experimental Opera Factory in London. The operas of Benjamin Britten were a magnet to Nigel, surrounded from youth as he had been by Britten's musical and dramatic presence together with Peter Pears’ unique and evocative partnership. Opera Factory’s Curlew River, with Nigel a memorable Madwoman, toured throughout Europe. His performances matured as his career developed, taking him into more original and unusual, sometimes risk-taking works, in main stream opera as well as music theatre.  In addition the fruitful association with John Eliot Gardiner, performing Monteverdi and Handel, and later with Richard Hickox in Britten and Walton, resulted in some outstanding performances and recordings. 
In following a meaningful career, Nigel Robson always sought a creative inspiration as much outside the music establishment as within.  Now, having appeared in major opera houses over many years throughout Europe and the Americas , he nurtures more personal projects. Recently his own creation, a dramatic, autobiographical extension of chamber music was premiered – The Tenor Man Story - an amalgam of song, poetry and prose... a rare and creative mix of genres. Work in progress includes an Anglo Saxon performance including Sally Beamish's The Seafarer with Britten's Abraham and Isaac and a work involving First World War stories.
