Matthew Rose
British bass Matthew Rose read History at university before studying at the Curtis Institute of Music in the United States. He was a member of the Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House from 2003 to 2005, and has returned subsequently as Tom (Un ballo in maschera), Zuniga (Carmen), Masetto (Don Giovanni) and Bottom (A Midsummer Night’s Dream). In the 2005/06 season he made an acclaimed debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Bottom and was the recipient of the John Christie Award. Other appearances include Speaker (Die Zauberflöte) for English National Opera, Collatinus
(The Rape of Lucretia) at the Teatro Real, Madrid, and Mozart’s Figaro for Welsh National Opera. In concert he has appeared at the Edinburgh and Aldeburgh Festivals and at the BBC Proms. Other notable concert engagements have seen him performing with the LSO, Dresden Staatskapelle, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Scottish Chamber Orchestra with conductors such as Tilson Thomas, Harding, Davis, Mackerras and Dutoit. In recital he has appeared at the Chester International Festival and with Malcolm Martineau at St John’s Smith Square and in Edinburgh.
