Jean-Efflam Bavouzet

The insatiable enthusiasm and artistic curiosity of the French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet have led him to explore a repertoire ranging from Haydn, Beethoven, Bartók and Prokofiev to contemporary works by composers such as Bruno Mantovani and Jörg Widmann. A former student of Pierre Sancan, he won first prize in the International Beethoven Competition in Cologne as well as the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New Yorkin 1986 and the Steven de Groote Chamber Music Prize at the Van Cliburn Competition in 1989. As well as performing, he has also recently completed a transcription for two pianos of Debussy’s dance poem Jeux, which has just been published by Durand, with a foreword by Pierre Boulez with whom he has maintained a close relationship ever since their first appearance together in 1998, performing Bartók’s Third Piano Concerto with the Orchestre de Paris. 

Bavouzet performs with leading international orchestras such as the Cleveland Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre national de France and Ensemble orchestral de Paris. Conductors with whom he collaborates include Vladimir Ashkenazy, Valery Gergiev, Daniele Gatti, Sir Andrew Davis, Marc Albrecht, Lawrence Foster, Charles Dutoit, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Andrew Litton, Ingo Metzmacher, Kent Nagano, Zoltán Kocsis, and Vassily Sinaisky.
 
Jean-Efflam Bavouzet has won multiple awards for his project to record Debussy’s Complete Works for Piano, most notably a 2009 BBC Music Magazine Award for Volume 3 and a 2009 Gramophone Award for Volume 4 of the cycle (both in the Instrumental category). Other awards include the 2007 and 2008 Choc de l’année of the magazine Le Monde de la Musique and, for Volume 2, the 2008 Diapason d’or. Jean-Efflam Bavouzet isa Professor for Life in the Piano Department of the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, Germany.
