George Guest
Welsh choral conductor, organist and teacher George Guest was director of the Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge, for forty years from 1951, during which time the Choir made over sixty recordings, numerous radio broadcasts and international concert tours. His commissioning of new works by contemporary composers such as Sir Michael Tippett, Herbert Howells and Sir Lennox Berkeley enlivened the Anglican choral repertory, and his influence on performance style was widespread; he favoured an extrovert, emotional approach to singing, encouraging his choristers to vary their tone quality for the style of music being performed. He trained several generations of choristers, choral scholars and organ scholars, many of whom have themselves become leading musicians. Honours awarded to him include a Lambeth MusD, Presidency of the Royal College of Organists and a CBE.
