Boris Berman
The artistry of Boris Berman, a Grammy nominee, is well known to audiences from his highly acclaimed performances with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, The Philharmonia (London), the Toronto Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Houston Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, St Petersburg Philharmonic, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
Born in Moscow, Boris Berman studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory before emigrating to Israel in 1973, and later to the US. A dedicated teacher, he has served on the faculties of the worlds finest schools, such as Indiana (Bloomington), Boston, Brandeis and Tel-Aviv universities, and currently heads the Piano Department of Yale School of Music. He also conducts master classes throughout the world, and has been named Honorary Professor of Shanghai Conservatory. He has made numerous recordings, including Schnittke’s complete works for solo piano, and works by Debussy, Stravinsky and Janacek, as well as the complete solo piano works by Prokofiev, the first pianist ever to undertake this task, released to great critical acclaim (all on Chandos).
In 2000 and 2008 respectively, Yale University Press published his books Notes from the Pianists Bench, which has been translated into several languages, and Prokofievs Piano Sonatas: A Guide for the Listener and the Performer. In May 2008, he performed at Carnegie Hall in New York to inaugurate the new Prokofiev Society of America of which he is the Founding Co-President. In 2008-2009 he appeared in the USA, China, Germany, Israel, Australia, Latvia, Italy, Poland, England, Portugal, Spain and Holland.
