Ashley Riches
Having studied at King’s College, Cambridge and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the British bass-baritone Ashley Riches was a Jette Parker Young Artist at The Royal Opera, Covent Garden from 2012 to 2014 and is a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist from 2016 to 2018. On the operatic stage he has sung Salieri (Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri), Michael (world premiere of Søren Nils Eichberg’s Glare), Moralès (Carmen), Mandarin (Turandot), Baron Douphol (La traviata), and Officer (Dialogues des Carmélites) at The Royal Opera, Schaunard (La bohème) at English National Opera, Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) at Garsington Opera, Polyphemus (Acis and Galatea) with the Academy of Ancient Music, Pollux (Castor et Pollux) with the Early Opera Company, and Owen Wingrave at Opéra national de Lorraine in Nancy. On the concert platform he has appeared in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex as Créon with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, a European tour of the St Matthew Passion with the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra, Mozart’s Requiem in Switzerland, France, and Spain with the Gabrieli Consort, Verdi’s Messa da requiem at the Royal Albert Hall, and the UK premiere of Shostakovich’s Orango and world premiere of John Powell’s Prussian Requiem, both with the Philharmonia Orchestra. Ashley Riches enjoys a fast-growing discography which includes recordings of Poulenc’s Chansons gaillardes with Graham Johnson, Shakespeare Sonnets set to music by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, the St John Passion with the Academy of Ancient Music, and Daniel Purcell’s The Judgement of Paris and Handel’s L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato with the Gabrieli Consort.
