Paul Huber

Paul Huber ( Kirchberg , February 17, 1918 - Sankt Gallen , February 25, 2001 ) was a Swiss composer , conductor , music educator and organist .

In 1928, Huber died mom and shortly after his father died of poisoning. The parents' farm was sold and the nine children were accommodated by uncles, aunts and acquaintances of the family. Huber came to a child in the same village, banker Alfons Stolz-Elser and his wife Hedwig, who supported him lovingly. His first piano and theory lessons he received from Helen Tuason in Wil , who was a student of Emil Frey.

Huber followed his studies at a college in the canton of Wales in 1933. In addition he received piano lessons and also participated in the student symphony orchestra. He also studied at St. Antonius College in Appenzell . Here too he received piano and organ lessons and played in the student orchestra and sang in the student choir. Here he wrote his student songs and found the premiere of his motet Tantum ergo in the monastery church.

Until his final exam, he studied at St Fidelis College in Stans , where he wrote several pieces for choir and harmonics orchestra, conducted by students. In addition to chamber music, he composed his first orchestral work, a Hymnische Musik auf den Frühling .

During his military service he also wrote military marches. By that time he had decided to study music.

He studied from 1940 to 1947 at the conservatory in Zurich in the subjects contrapunt at Willy Burkhard , piano at Rudolf Wittelsbach , organ of Luigi Favani and school music at Ernst Hörler . From 1947 to 1948 he studied at Nadia Boulanger in Paris . From 1943 to 1949 he was organist at the urban St. Nikolaas church in Wil , Switzerland . From 1951 to 1983 he was a singer and piano teacher at the Kantonschool in Sankt Gallen . In 1979 he became honorary doctorate of the University of Friborg Friborg , Switzerland .

In the post- war period , he also had his first successes as a composer. His miss Messe zu Ehren des Saints Gallus received the 3rd prize in the composition of the St. Gallischer Diözesan-Cäcilien band . The Concert Ouvertüre for concert orchestra went to premiere at the St. Gallic Kantonalmusikfest in Altstätten . The officials of the Eidgenössische Musikfest in Sankt Gallen gave him the task of writing a work for their festival. That became the work of Frau Musika . This composition contributed to his fame about the Cantonese borders abroad and abroad.

His oeuvre includes songs for school, children, women, men and mixed choirs. He composed numerous motets, cantates, oratories, occasional music, a chamberopera, a singing game, symphonies and chamber music. Also worth mentioning are his compositions for harmonics and fanfare orchestras and brass bands.
