Johanna Muller-Hermann
Johanna Müller-Hermann was an Austrian composer and pedagogue born on January 15, 1878 in Vienna. Early in her life, she and her sisters received music lessons as was expected of a bourgeois education. She graduated from the Teachers’ Training college and taught for several years at a Viennese primary school until she married Otto Müller Martini in 1893. She studied under Alexander von Zemlinsky, and was one of the foremost European female composers of orchestral and chamber music in her day. She wrote an oratorio, In Memoriam, to a text by Walt Whitman, and a symphonic fantasy on the Ibsen play Brand. She later became a Professor of Music Theory at the New Vienna Conservatory in 1918. She died on April 19, 1941.
